Rio Grande Water Walk

About the Rio Grande Water Walk…

A group of diverse  organizations and nonprofits are embarking on a great walk for the Rio Grande River in the pursuit of gaining its legal personhood/Rights of Nature. As you all know, the Rio Grande River is a major lifeforce for so many and the home to millions of lifeforms and diverse and unique ecosystems, and we believe the time has come where we must physically come together and begin the process of declaring it a valid community member in the eyes of the law, one that can be advocated for, protected and honored as such.

Walk for the Water. Walk for the Rivers. Walk for our Future.

Rio Grande Water Walk—Seeking Legal Personhood for the Rio Grande Watershed

Starting on April 8th, 2022, a diverse group of nonprofits, water protectors, and environmentalists will join in Santa Fe, NM, to set out on a walk spanning over 300 miles along the Rio Grande River to its headwaters in Creede, Colorado. The goal of this walk is to bring awareness to the need for legal protection for the Rio Grande River and its tributaries and to honor the health and wellness of the water through collective prayer and ceremony.

Along the way, we will clean up riversides, plant trees, hold awareness concerts and ceremonies while advocating for Rights of Nature for the Rio Grande in New Mexico and Colorado. Participants are invited to be present for any stretch of the walk, including events along the way, and there will be support vehicles, large buses for storage of belongings/gear, food and water, etc. The walk will begin in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on April 10th, and the destination one month later will be on May 10th, 2022, in Creede, Colorado.

The Rio Grande Water Walk will:

  • Walk over 300 miles while advocating for Rights of Nature for the Rio Grande and its tributaries
  • Educate people on Community Rights and Rights of Nature
  • Ask municipalities to adopt a Bill of Rights to protect the Rio Grande and its tributaries and their surrounding ecosystems.
  • Plant trees and clean up roads and rivers along the walk.
  • Promote and distribute information on Indigenous Rights, Freedoms and Practices.
  • Distribute literature about building community seed banks, regenerative farming, sustainable agriculture, and environmental challenges and sustainability.
  • Invite people to educational events, ceremonies, and rallies along the way that collaborate and celebrate diversity and inclusivity.
  • Weave a network of organizations focused on regenerative and sustainable living.

Why Rights of Nature For The Rio Grande?

The Rio Grande Water Walk believes that giving legal rights to The Rio Grande River will protect it for future generations to come. Rights of Nature is similar to legal human rights or even corporate rights in the way they are recognized in the courts of law. Rights for the Rio Grande River would include the right to legal personhood, independent right to flourish, right to exist, regenerate its vital cycles, and naturally evolve without human-caused disruption. Rights of Nature also provide for various subsidiary rights, such as the right to restoration, the right to its natural processes, and the right to ecosystem functioning without interference.
